WEISMAN ART MUSEUM
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
The Weisman Art Museum Is housed in a building designed in 1993 by the well-known American architect, Frank Gehry. Over the past 25 plus years the Museum's collections, exhibit offerings and programming have grown significantly putting considerable pressure on the capacity of the existing building to the point where reorganization and possibly expansion of the facilities will be needed.
WBA was commissioned to prepare a planning study to assess the needs of the museum's collection facilities and develop strategies for reorganizing those facilities within the existing building. The study included exploring what improvements could be made in the existing building and establishing what requirements would need to be met in developing an off-site solution. It included evaluating an existing off-site facility as part of that solution.
The focus of the exercise was to develop more efficient methods of housing the required facilities while improving access to the material for curators and the public.
